THE CHAIRMAN’S POSSESSION and other 100 word vignettes

And the company Chairman

Upon the Prospectus entering him

Became violently disturbed.

And in a most astonishing frenzy

Convulsed and distorted his features

And he rolled about on the Boardroom floor

And the board members

Revealed to the shareholders their Dividends.

Then they bound him with chains and rope, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he tore the rope in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him and they left the room. For the next few hours he cried out, rolled about, and stabbed himself with pens. It had not been a very good year.

A Catholic priest, possessed by Satan

Recited his child molesting ways backwards

Blessed his bishop’s silence

Crossed his chest with gold and silver

And canonized a corrupt pope,

At midday in an empty cathedral.

A crowd had come to watch but stood outside, and a man named Jesus Christ went in and said to the priest “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to suffer this appalling church? How long must I allow it to bear my name?” And Jesus rebuked the Catholic Church, and it came out of the priest and he was healed.

Economists who make prophetic failures

Are set around in a circle

And within it lay a bleeding corpse.

At a given signal

The faulty Economists rush at the body

And engorge on the corpse’s entrails.

And sitting satiated before their computers

They prophesy the future once again.

But it is better economists speak in a language for the every person and not in tongues for themselves; for no one understands them. They merely surround the movement of money with mystery. The ones who speak of economics in ordinary tongues need no interpreters, and no academics to support them.

The Oracle of Lung Cancer

Each year is heard to scream

And enter into violent spasms.

When it inhales

The Smoke of a Million Cigarettes

The Smoke puts the Oracle into a trance

For it to predict the outcome

Of the smoker’s inhalations.

The Oracle knows that coughers will leave their last day with coughing, and defending their smoking desires. They will say, “Where is the promise of giving up? For ever since there have been cigarettes, it’s been the same as it ever was.” And yet they deliberately overlook the fact lungs existed long before cigarettes.

Corporations also make sacrifices

To gods.

Some are macabre

Like hanging a janitor

Like drawing and quartering a clerk

Like beheading a tea lady

To appease the gods of greed

When billion dollar profits drop.

A junior clerk was taken to the place called The Skull, and there he was crucified. And the staff cast lots over his desk belongings. And they stood by watching, while the chief clerk scoffed at him, saying, “He transferred approved home loans to the right customer accounts. Let him do one for himself. If you are truly a Bank Clerk, save yourself!”

There is a venerated woman

Who stands by a stream

Listening to the water’s murmurs and cries.

Understanding what she hears

She then stands before men

Fighting from disagreements

And calls them to rationality;

To give ground instead of causing blood.

But they ignore her for they are filled with noise. They are full of envy, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of women, insolent, boastful, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless, greedy. They hear her decree which says these men deserve punishment, but not only do they ignore her they give approval to any man who does the same.
